The Gabig family hopped aboard for an evening trip with Capt Joby, and were treated with absolutely perfect weather and an amazing bass bite! Starting off with a little bit of trolling, everyone managed to hook up with some quality bass, all of which were well above the slot. As the sun began to go down the team switched over to live-lining, and boated another 6 bass, the biggest tipping the scales at 24 pounds! This week, massive amounts of bunker had finally arrived in the Western Sound. We thought last year's spring run was great, but this year's is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! On every trip this week, at all of our spring spots, we ran into huge schools of striped bass blasting bait on the surface. Live bait and trolling did the trick to entice fish up to 22 pounds, including too many slot fish to count. As if it was a completely different day, the afternoon turned cloudy, windy and cold, but amazingly the bite just got hotter with bigger fish! Scott S. and his son Hunter braved the far from perfect elements and were rewarded with some above average April stripers. Not only did Hunter catch his first line-sider ever, the duo managed 8 bass, four of which weighing in at just over 20 pounds. Although a bit brisk at first light, the bright sunny morning quickly warmed up with some red hot striper action for Charlie and Henry Ramsay. The brothers managed to land 10 bass to 12 pounds by mid-morning, not bad for only a couple hours of fishing! The striper season is open and the striped bass are available in the biggest numbers we have seen in many years! Though Jai and his family did not have the best possible conditions, there were plenty of fish.  The strong northerly breeze combined with the low tide should have made it very difficult.  However, Captain Joby had no problem finding fish and getting them to eat. The fall trips are what Long Island Fishing Charters is so famous for! Once the migration starts, the bite just keeps on getting better and better. However, some days are simply amazing and it doesn't much better than this. Light wind, sunny skies, and hungry fish! Bring on the Fall fishing! The shorter days and cooler nights have brought the water temps down quite a bit, and the fish are preparing for the fall migration. We are seeing full-on bass blitzes in the bay, as well as schools of huge bluefish thrashing on peanut bunker. Tara and Michael from the Cornell Cooperative Extension had over 20 striped bass ranging from 26 to 38 inches.  All of the fishing was done using eels.  Most of the fish were well over 28 inches.  At least a dozen fish were over 33 inches.  The fish were caught in four different spots throughout the trip.  However, some of the spots held fish that just didn't want to bite!  Fortunately, the Long Island Fishing Charter boats are very fast and can cover a lot of ground. Alex and Illusion from Cornell Cooperative Extension had well over 20 stripers in and over the slot in less than 5 hours of fishing.  There were several fish well over 36 inches.  The fish were present in many different spots.  Six days of overcast and north winds pushed loads of bait into the western Long Island Sound.  The shorter days and falling water temperatures are always the best trigger for the striper migration.
